IT 4 Australian Republican Movement
Stand up and be counted

IT 4 Republic message

IT industry pioneer, Roger Allen is a candidate on the Australian Republican Movement ticket for the February Constitutional Convention. Mr Allen called for the IT industry and the on-line community to get involved and show leadership in this debate.

"The IT industry and the on-line community are among the most vibrant, forward looking sectors of our nation. The future living standards of all Australians depend on how cleverly we develop and apply new technology...breaking down the tyranny of distance, innovating, applying knowledge, on-line...globally.

Our system of Government, incorporating the rights of citizens of Australia, is the legal and social foundation on which our industry is built. The IT industry is wiring Australia to the world - endeavouring to project a new image - an image supplanting that of a quarry, farm, and beach. Having the Queen of England as the official Head of State and the Australian Constitution as an Act of the British Parliament is an inappropriate symbol for a self confident, multicultural country fully engaged in the fastest growing region in the world.
The Australian IT industry should stand up and be counted. In the US the industry has grown by dint of its great track record and pro-active stance to be a significant political voice. Speaking out on and winning important debates in Internet censorship, free trade and privacy. For Australia these debates are important too, but what credibility do we have to espouse these if we remain apathetic to the most fundamental of questions.

An argument for a Republic is not being anti the British Monarchy; rather it is like growing up. Maturing, being self confident, fully independent, looking to the future and being realistic.

Recognising and respecting our Anglo-Saxon forefathers but also respecting and recognising the prior occupation of Australia by Aboriginal People and Torres Strait Islanders and the 40% of Australians not descendants of Britain"

The IT industry prides itself on being dynamic, constantly challenging the status quo, "pushing the envelope". It is an agent of change in business and the wider community. Responsibiity goes with such a role.
