Fairy Dress

heritage

Rare sample of a rare occasion - my attempt to 'strut the boards' as a ballerina for the first and last time. Late 1950s dance classes in the Croydon hall ( a small 'city edge' suburb housing young families near bush settings), culminated in the quintessential large concert on the big stage of the Civic Hall - sets provided by dads, costumes provided courtesy of mums, production design thanks to the committee of Ballet Mothers.

I was the fifth fairy to enter the stage where we formed a ring around the main fairy while she sat on a pretty toadstool, in the forest. My real memory is of 'bringing the house down' or more literally Mr Goons' big cardboard fairy tree as I 'thumped' on from stage left.

My lasting 'fuzzy' is that my mother made this costume by hand and it was lovely...exactly like all the others!
