world milestones

The year of the Whitlam Dismissal - 1975

I was teaching at Daylesford Technical High School in country Victoria when the news came through and spread like wildfire from teacher to teacher, both in front of their classes and through the staffroom on this hot day.

Huge increases in student numbers in the 1970’s had led the Education Department to award Studentships for teacher training and to ‘ship’ in hundreds of overseas teachers, mainly American. This meant that a large percentage of staff in schools, especially country schools, were under 30 years of age. In Daylesford, around 50% of a staff of ... a big influence in the small town.

Daylesford also housed a strong artistic community, many of whom taught as well. Young artists forging a fresh approach to contemporary Australian painting, ceramics, illustration, sculpture and writing. Here, the principles of education were strong and the desire to vitalise school aims was high.
