My grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Hoban

tree of importance

Maie Hoban 1887-1984

Maie was the fourth generation of her family in Australia after migrating from Ireland.
In the midst of a busy married life, her husband died, leaving her to raise five children and manage a mortgage debacle with the banks. In the 1920s, this was a difficult task.

Throughout her long working life Maie was dedicated to helping establish high professional standards of writing and performance in Australian theatre - with a pool of trained actors.

Maie taught speech and drama in Melbourne for nearly 40 years. She established the Unnamed Players, to provide her students with the opportunity to perform. Later, she established the Pilgrim Theatre near St. Peter's Church building in East Melbourne.
Maie Hoban provided prizes to encourage Australian writers - particularly playwrights.
I have always admired her and the role she played.
